Women pick older age than men as right time to marry: survey

SEOUL, Feb. 12 (Yonhap) -- Women think of a higher age than men as the appropriate time to get married, although both genders agree that early 30s is the best, a survey said Tuesday.

A total of 1,140 single men and 1,324 single women were canvassed by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs for the survey that found 36.6 percent of the women see 30 to 31 as the best ages to get married. Another 26.2 percent picked 32 to 34, and 17.4 percent chose over 35. Comparatively lower 14.5 percent picked 28 to 29, and 5.4 percent picked 27 or younger.

Men agreed that 30-31 was the most appropriate age for women to wed (40.8 percent). Their next choices were 28 to 29 (21.4 percent), 32-34 (13.4 percent), and 28-29 (21.4 percent). The survey said 16.1 percent picked 27 or younger, while 8.3 percent chose over 35.

Women who were asked about the best marriage age for men also agreed on early 30s, picked by 57.1 percent, but their following choices were older ages. Ages 32-34 were preferred by 34.9 percent of the women. Next was 30-31 (22.2 percent). By age group, however, 36.1 percent of the women picked over 35.

Only 5.3 percent answered 28-29, and 1.4 percent picked 27 or younger.

Analysis from Statistics Korea from 2016 indicates that the country's marrying age is rising. The average age for first marriage was 32.8 for men and 30.1 for women, respective increases of 0.2 and 0.1. The marriage age difference between the genders narrowed from 3.2 10 years before.
