SEOUL, Feb. 14 (Yonhap) -- South Korean Defense Minister Jeong Kyeong-doo will visit the United Arab Emirates (UAE) this week for talks with his counterpart on ways to strengthen military ties and defense industry cooperation between the two countries, his ministry said Thursday.
He plans to depart for the UAE later in the day at the official invitation of the UAE Minister of State for Defense Affairs Mohammed Ahmed Al-Bowardi.
The two are scheduled to hold bilateral talks. Jeong will also meet with South Korean troops in the region -- the Ahk and Cheonghae units.
South Korea dispatched the 150-strong Ahk unit to the UAE in early 2011 to help train special forces and conduct joint military drills there.
The Cheonghae naval unit, with more than 300 personnel, has been operating in the Gulf of Aden since 2009 to support a anti-piracy operations.
Before heading back to Seoul next Tuesday, the minister also plans to attend the IDEX International Defence Exhibition & Conference in Abu Dhabi.
